Background

Scope and content:

The bulk of the materials in the Florence Christoph Research Notes Collection are from 1699-2013, and specifically includes research notes based on Albany families. Such materials as copies of maps, deeds, birth/death certificates, census records and letters from Albany family members as well as handwritten/typed notes by the researcher of the researched families are included within the collection.

The organization of the materials has been strictly kept in original order. Since there are scattered dates or no dates at all on the materials, the preservation of the order in which the creator kept them is essential. The file listing titles have been kept the same as the creator’s titles to help keep the original order of the collection. Also included is an organized listing of the materials and their location in the collection by contents.

Biographical / historical:

Florence Christoph was born in Montgomery County, New York, and was raised on a farm in Stone Arabia. One of her hobbies was researching her family’s genealogy, during which she discovered that all of her immigrant ancestors were in America before 1760. She eventually began a new career as a professional genealogist and was soon nationally certified in the field. From there, she began writing and editing many books; her major projects being multi-volume genealogies of the Schuyler and Van Voorhees families. Other books included Upstate New York in the 1760s; Vital Records of Jerusalem Reformed Church Records, Feura Bush, Albany County, NY; and Schuyler Genealogy: A Compendium of Sources Pertaining to the Schuyler Families in America Prior to 1800. She and her husband, Peter Christoph, also co-edited several volumes of colonial New York government documents.

Florence greatly admired the artwork of her father-in-law, Hajo Christoph, and was especially proud of having brought his work to the attention of the Albany Institute of History and Art, which now holds many of his landscapes and examples of his commercial work. Florence died in Selkirk, New York, in July 2011.
