Scope and content:

The Heath Babcock Papers span the period from 1902 through 1976 and contain documents relating solely to Ms. Babcock’s personal and family life. The collection is divided into two series: I. Personal Papers, 1933-1976; II. Photographs 1902-1976. The collection was acquired for the Library in 1995 by Norman S. Rice, director emeritus of the AIHA and a personal friend of Ms. Babcock.

Series I. Personal Papers (1917-1976) consists of retirement material, containing cards, correspondence and a drafted speech related to Ms. Babcock’s retirement in 1965 from the New York State Library; itineraries, correspondence, notes, and pamphlets associated with organized tours of Egypt and Northeastern Africa which Ms. Babcock undertook in 1974; itineraries, notes, sketches, and materials related to a guided tour of the Galapagos in 1976; clippings and two copies of a photograph of her father Robert Babcock (1857-1937), an Albany physician; correspondence and three copies of a photograph pertaining to the appearance of an article in the National Cyclopedia of American Biography about Ms. Babcock’s brother Robert Witbeck Babcock (1857-1933). Series I also includes a scrapbook kept by Ms. Babcock from 1917 when she was a student at the Albany Academy for Girls. The scrapbook includes photographs, calling cards, clippings, and school memorabilia.

Series II. Photographs and Scrapbook (1902-1976) includes a cyanotype album depicting the Babcock family from 1902-1906, a photograph album from 1913-1921 depicting members of the Babcock family, vacations at Lake George and Big Moose, New York, and Heath Babcock’s tenure at Vassar College, including college clubs, plays, pageants, sport events, Founder’s Day, Field Day, and a trip to the Mohonk Mountain House. Included with this photograph album is a Vassar College calendar from 1921 and multiple negatives. A scrapbook, from 1917 while Ms. Babcock was a student in the Albany Academy for Girls, is also included. Series II includes photographs and negatives from Ms. Babcock’s 1974 trip to Egypt and Africa.

Biographical / historical:

Heath Babcock was born in Albany on August 29 1901, Heath Babcock was educated at the Albany Academy for Girls, Vassar College, the New York State Library School, and the University of Michigan. Ms. Babcock worked at the New York State Library for 38 years as a medical librarian. Ms. Babcock died in 1992.
