Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains a scrapbook and scholarly papers relating to sports, specifically running and the Albany Mercury Club in Albany, New York.

Biographical / historical:

The scrapbook, created by Nick Dunn, historian for the Albany Mercury Club, records the early history of the Albany Mercury Club through news clippings. The Albany Mercury Club was created by runners for runners, held many athletic relay games for students, and was known as a track and field organization. The scrapbook highlights individual runners as well as major events that were sponsored by the Albany Mercury Club. The club was organized in the fall of 1932 to bring local runners together for team competition and to promote major running events. George Mahar was the founder, president, coach and primary organizer of the club. Although he was not an active runner, he channeled his energies into race promotion and organization.

Also in this collection are scholarly papers written in the 1980’s by Paul Murray, Associate Professor of Sociology at Siena College. The papers are mostly about the Albany Mercury Club and the history of running in Albany, NY. One or two of the papers highlight the unsung hero of running in Albany, Johnny DeGloria.
