Abstract:
John Goodchild Dow was a U.S. Representative from New York. Dow was an unsuccessful candidate for the New York state legislature in 1954 and 1956 before being elected as a Democrat to the 89th and 90th Congresses (January 3, 1965-January 3, 1969). Dow was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the 91st Congress in 1968, but was elected to the 92nd Congress (January 3, 1971-January 3, 1973) before being an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the 93rd Congress in 1972, an unsuccessful candidate for election to the 94th Congress in 1974, and an unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the 98th Congress in 1982. Dow died on March 11, 2003, in Suffern New York. His papers contain materials related to his political career.

This collection consists of materials from John Goodchild Dow's service in Congress, including correspondence, bills, subject files, reports, and press releases.

Biographical / historical:

John Goodchild Dow was born in New York City on May 6, 1905, and attended the public schools of Canton, Massachusettes. Dow started at Brown University, but eventually transferred and earned an A.B. from Harvard College in 1927 and an M.A. from Columbia University in 1937. Dow was a systems analyst for large corporations (1929-1964), director of civil defense in Grand View, NY (1950-1964), and chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals in Grand View (1964).

Dow was an unsuccessful candidate for the New York state legislature in 1954 and 1956 before being elected as a Democrat to the 89th and 90th Congresses (January 3, 1965-January 3, 1969). Dow was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the 91st Congress in 1968, but was elected to the 92nd Congress (January 3, 1971-January 3, 1973) before being an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the 93rd Congress in 1972, an unsuccessful candidate for election to the 94th Congress in 1974, and an unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the 98th Congress in 1982. Dow, was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1968, a staff assistant to the U.S.Congress, assistant director for the New York State Comprehensive Employment Training Act program from 1976 to 1982, and a founder of Americans Against Nuclear War in 1980.

In his spare time, Dow enjoyed dealing and collecting antiques. Dow died on March 11, 2003, in Suffern, NY and was survived by his three children. Dow has a post office named after him in Tappan, New York.

Acquisition information:
John Goodchild Dow donated his papers to Syracuse University in 1968-1969 and 1973. In 2006, the papers were transferred to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives. Another donation to the collection was received by the University at Albany in 2014 from John Thomas McAndrew.
