Scope and content:

This collection documents the extensive work of death penalty abolitionist Celeste Fitzgerald in the State of New Jersey. It consists of materials related to the passage of a moratorium and then legislation abolishing the death penalty in New Jersey, correspondence, articles, notes, loose clippings, scrapbooks with clippings, videos, and ephemera.

Biographical / historical:

Celeste Fitzgerald, currently director of partnerships with Equal Justice USA, was a founding member of New Jerseyans for Alternatives for the Death Penalty and later served as its director. She also was a field organizer for Equal Justice USA, and founded and served as executive director of New Jerseyans for a Death Penalty Moratorium. Fitzgerald led a multi-faceted grassroots advocacy campaign resulting in passage of bipartisan legislation that eliminated capital punishment in New Jersey in December 2007.

Celeste Fitzgerald donated all materials in this collection to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives in November 2017 .
