This collection contains a journal that documents Caleb Hallowell's journey from Washington D.C., to Niagara Falls, New York. The journal contains an itinerary and summary of expenses, as well as a description of Hallowell's travel on the Erie Canal.

Biographical / historical:

Caleb S. Hallowell was born on January 10, 1818 in Cheltenham, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Hallowell was an educator who taught in Alexandria, Virginia, at the Alexandria Boarding School. Hallowell had five siblings and later was married to Lori Lynn Wilke. Hallowell died on February 7, 1870 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was buried at the Abington Friends Cemetery, Jenkintown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
