Background

Scope and content:

The Chemung County Sesquicentennial Commission Records include correspondence (1985-1988); administrative documents (1984-1987); photographs and slides (1986); and assorted papers.

Biographical / historical:

In 1986, Chemung County commemorated its sesquicentennial (150th anniversary). Numerous events occurred throughout the year as part of the celebrations, including awards ceremonies, musical performances, and essay and art contests held among local students. The centerpiece of the celebrations was a parade held in Elmira on June 14. Over one hundred local and regional organizations marched in the parade, which began on South Main St. and proceeded north over the Chemung River before ending on East Water St. Responsibility for planning, budgeting, and promoting the year’s events fell to a commission comprised of notable local figures and representatives of towns throughout Chemung County. In April 1985, commission members began meeting monthly to carry out their work, with Finley M. Steele serving as director and J. Arthur Kieffer serving as chairman. The commission continued its operations into the first few months of 1987 in order to tie up loose ends and oversee the sesquicentennial’s final event, the burying of a time capsule containing local memorabilia to be opened in the year 2136.
