This collection contains invoices, correspondence, and miscellaneous personal papers associated with Elias A. Monroe of Baldwin, New York, and his business ventures.

Biographical / historical:

Elias A. Monroe (1837-1901) was born in Danby, New York. During the 1860s, he resided in the Town of Baldwin where he ran a tavern. In 1875, he relocated to Elmira where he began manufacturing mineral water. In the 1880s, he established the first omnibus service in the city which he ran with his only son, Eugene. His wife was Jennie Hammond Monroe (1841-1925). They are both buried together in North Chemung Cemetery in Baldwin.
