Scope and content:

The NAACP Elmira-Corning Branch Collection is broken into two series. Series I: Presidential Records – newspaper clippings and copies of records official correspondence with NAACP headquarters for each branch president, 1917-2017. Series II: Event and Programs – handbills, programs, and newspaper clippings related to events and programs hosted by the NAACP Elmira-Corning Branch, 1980-2017.

Biographical / historical:

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in 1909. The Elmira-Corning Branch No.2144 was established in 1917 with Mrs. Cornelia F. Stewart Matthews as president. It was officially chartered in 1920. The branch ceased to meet at some point during the 1930s. In 1942, it was revived and re-chartered under the leadership of Mrs. Grace Higgins Mann. There have been 27 presidents since the branch’s formation with Mrs. Georgia Verdier serving as the current president. Elmira-Corning Branch No.2144 has worked locally to fight discrimination in housing, employment, and accommodations. They offer a range of programs aimed at dealing with issues faced by the Black community and promoting community pride.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
