The Jim Hare Papers include video cassettes of political campaign ads and debates; campaign fliers; and photographs.

Biographical / historical:

James “Jim” Hare (1946-present) has been in Democratic Party politics in Elmira since the 1970s. He served as City Councilman for 6th District on Elmira’s Southside from 1980 to 1988 and again from 1996 to 2011. He was elected mayor of Elmira in 1987 and served three consecutive terms from 1988 to 1993. He made another bid for mayor and lost in 1995. He ran for the New York State Assembly, 137th District and lost in 2006 and 2010. He also served several terms on the Board of the Chemung County Library District, Elmira Water Board, Chemung County Board of Elections, and Chemung County Sewer Board. Outside of politics, Hare worked for over 32 years as an American history and civics teacher in both the Horseheads and Elmira school districts.

The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Jim Hare in 2016.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
