Scope and content:

The Chemung County Fair Collection contains premium lists, programs, posters, photographs, news clippings, and various ephemera associated with the Chemung County Fair.

Biographical / historical:

The Chemung County Agricultural Society began hosting the annual Chemung County Fair in 1842. Fairs were held at various locations in Elmira before the purchase of the Chemung County Fairgrounds at 170 Fairview Road in Horseheads in the 1890s. The James E. Strates Shows have provided rides and other attractions at the fair since the 1940s.

Acquisition information:
The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Michael Taylor in 2019.

Access and use

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
