The Trinity Episcopal Church Collection contains parish registers, 1833-1897; newspaper clippings, 1850-2020; photographs and albums, 1880s-2000s; church histories; administrative documents; worship bulletins; newsletters, 1977-2020; cassette recordings; and assorted documents.

Biographical / historical:

Trinity Episcopal Church of Elmira, N.Y. as incorporated in 1833. The first building was completed in 1836 on the southwest corner of West Church Street and what is now Railroad Avenue in Elmira. In 1855 the cornerstone was laid for a new church at 304 North Main Street. The following clergy were the rectors of the parish: Rev. Thomas Clark, 1833 - 1836; Rev. Richard Smith, 1836 -1838; Rev. Gordon Winslow, 1838 – 1841; Rev. Kendrick Metcalf, 1841 - 1842; Rev. Stephen Douglas, 1842 - 1844; Rev. Washington VanZandt, 1844 - 1847; Rev. Benjamin W. Whitcher, 1847 - 1849; Rev. Andrew D. Hull, 1849 - 1866; Rev. William Paret, 1866 - 1869; Rev. George H. McKnight, 1869 - 1905; Rev. Charles McKnight, 1905 - 1911; Rev. Herbert Hannah, 1911 -1917; Rev. Henry E. Hubbard, 1917 - 1953; Rev. David Kingman, 1953 - 1974; Rev. John C. Humphries, Jr., 1975- 1997, Rev. William C. Lutz, 1999 - 2016; and Rev. Wanda R. Copeland, 1916 - 2020.The parish closed in September 2020. The church and adjacent buildings still stand today.

The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Trinity Episcopal Church in 2020.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
