The Lake Street Presbyterian Church Collection contains records of baptisms, confirmations, marriages, departure, and deaths; newspaper clippings; photographs of members and events; church histories, administrative documents, worship bulletins, newsletters, ministry programs, and assorted documents.

Biographical / historical:

Lake Street Presbyterian Church was organized as the Second Presbyterian Society on February 8, 1861. It later became the Second Presbyterian Church, and, finally, Lake Street Presbyterian Church. In 1861, land was purchased on the northeast corner of Lake and East Church Streets and a new church building was dedicated on June 13, 1862. Some of the pastors include the Rev. David Murdoch (1860-1861); the Rev. N.M. Sherwood (1869-1875); the Rev. Samuel T. Clark (1875-1882); the Rev. A.R. Macombray (1883); The Rev. Arthur. W. Spooner (1883-1889); the Rev. Allen F. DeCamp (1889-1900); the Rev. R. Lew Williams (1900-1931); the Rev. Henry White (1931-1949); the Rev. Barnett Elby (1949-1959); the Rev. Gordon Mattice (1960-1971); the Rev. Robert S. Rochelle (1966-1986); the Rev. J. Edward Sale (1966-1986); the Rev. John B. McLaren (1987-2002); and the Rev. Ross Raymond (2006-2020). Lake Street Presbyterian Church dissolved effective November 1, 2020 and the property was sold to The City of Light Church.

Acquisition information:
The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by the City of Light Church in 2021.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
