Background

Scope and content:

The Norman K. Christiansen Papers include technical drawings (ca. 1930s-1970s); administrative documents (1964-1973); legal documents (1983-1985); newspaper and journal articles (ca. 1960s-1970s); correspondence (ca. 1960s-1970s); and assorted papers.

Biographical / historical:

Norman K. Christiansen was a design draftsman employed by the U.S. Steel, American Bridge Division, Elmira, N.Y. plant from 1948 to 1983. Christiansen started with U.S. Steel in September 1948, following service in the U.S. Army during World War Two. After being laid off from the company in 1983, Christiansen and a colleague, John Dickinson, were denied what they believed to be their rightful retirement benefits. This precipitated a protracted legal battle that eventually reached the United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, and resulted in a successful outcome for Christiansen and Dickinson in 1985.
