Background

Scope and content:

The Elmira Are Retired Teachers Association Collection includes the minutes of the Elmira Women Classroom Teachers Association, 1944-1957; and the administrative records and scrapbooks of the Elmira Are Retired Teachers Association, 1959-1990.

Biographical / historical:

The Elmira Area Retired Teachers Association began as the Elmira Women Classroom Teachers' Association in the early 40s. The organization was part political action group and part social club. As the founding members reached retirement age, they shifted the focus of the group's political action from one focused on the needs of current teachers, to one focused on those of retired teachers. In 1959, they became the Elmira Area Retired Teachers’ Association (E.A.R.T.A.), a regional chapter of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
