This collection contains Lucy Diven’s dairies from 1866-1888 (with transcripts); account books from 1879-1888; as well as notes and newspaper clippings about the Diven family.

Biographical / historical:

Lucy Brown Diven was born to Alden and Minerva Brown of Clinton, New York on June 8, 1833. She married George M. Diven of Elmira on June 3, 1863. The couple resided in Elmira on Lake Street. They had six children together, four of whom survived to adulthood. Her husband George worked as a lawyer while Lucy kept house and raised the children. Lucy died on September 2, 1888 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Camille A. Aleixo acquired the diaries and was working on a book about them at the time of her death. The collection includes her notes and research materials.

This collection was donated by the Estate of Camille A. Aleixo in 2021 and 2022.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
