The Allen Family Photographs collection contains Harry R. Allen's photo albums, 1905-1918; Harry R. Allen's photographs from his time at Cornell and during World War I; and miscellaneous Allen family photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Allen family consisting of Samuel B. Allen (1863-1942), wife Juliet Horton Allen (1867-1932), and sons Waldo (1885-1971) and Harry R. (1887-1963) moved from the Dakota Territories to Elmira in 1890. Samuel established feed store and livery hack stable. The family lived mostly on the city's Southside before Samuel purchased a farm in Southport after his retirement. Harry R. Allen studied at the Cornell University School of Architecture. During World War I, he served as Captain of the Commanding Battery, 306th Artillery of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. He primarily lived downstate following the war.

The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Barbara Morrissey in 2016.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
