Biographical / historical:

David H. Tuthill (1818-approx. 1873) owned a dry goods store, Tuthill & Brooks, in Elmira, New York. He and his wife Sarah Jane McQuhae (1814-1886) lived at 243 Lake Street. They had two daughters, Mary B. Tuthill Reid (1841-1918) and Fanny M. Tuthill Cooper (1849-1924). The husbands of the two daughters founded the Reid & Cooper foundry in Elmira. William M. Cooper (1882-1985) was the son of Fanny Tuthill and John N. Cooper (1839-1916). In 1911, he married Helen Sabin (died 1965). They had four children, John, Jane, Mary, and Charles. He worked for the American Sales Book Company from 1906 to 1934, before moving briefly to New York City. In 1939, he returned to become the vice-president of the American LaFrance Company. Ariel S. Thurston (1810-1894) was born in Goffstown, New Hampshire. He came to Elmira in 1835, along with his sister, Clarissa, to help her establish a school. During the 1830s, he studied law with Charles Butler of New York City before returning to Elmira in 1839 to establish his own practice. He went on to become a county judge and was also involved in Chemung County politics. Thurston’s son, Charles, married into the Tuthill family via the Reids.
