The Gilbert-Susemihl Collection contains Clara Gilbert's diaries, 1916-1926; Thomas Wilson's diary, 1870; and Herman R. Susemihl's personal papers and photographs, 1893-1960.

Biographical / historical:

Clara Gilbert (1903-1995) was the eldest daughter of restaurant-owner Del Gilbert. After graduating from Elmira Free Academy in 1921, she worked for the Chamber of Commerce Employment Bureau throughout the 1920s. In 1928, she married Laurence H. Baker of Elmira. Herman R. Susemihl (1877-1964) joined Company L of the 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. After his honorable discharge, he worked as a clerk at Gosper-Kelly Shoe Store. During World War II, he volunteered as plane spotter for the Civil Air Defense.

Acquisition information:
The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Ed Susemihl in 2012 2013.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
