Scope and content:

The Emma Kingsley Scrapbook Collection contains scrapbooks on Riverside Elementary School, 1924-1940; the Riverside School PTA, 1939-1940; and the Zonta Club, 1933-1940.

Biographical / historical:

Emma Kingsley (1889-1980) worked as a teacher in the Elmira City School district beginning in 1918. From 1927 to 1955, she served as the Principal of Riverside Elementary School (School No. 7) located on Riverside Avenue on Elmira's Southside. In addition to her work as an educator, Kingsley was an active member of Elmira's Zonta Club, an organization devoted to the advancement of women. Beginning in 1933, she served as president of the local branch and was involved in the club's leadership throughout the 1930s. She was also a member of the local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, and AARP.

These items were donated to the collection in 2013 by Joyce Kane and Margaret Lorden.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
