Biographical / historical:

The Elmira Bank was established in 1853 and became the Second National Bank of Elmira in 1863. In 1929, it merged with the Merchants National Bank & Trust Company to form the First National Bank & Trust Company, one of the region's largest banks. The name was changed to the Elmira Bank & Trust Company in 1939. In 1953, it merged with several other regional banks to form the Marine Midland Trust Company of the Southern Tier, a subsidiary of Marine Midland Bank, with offices in Elmira, Elmira Heights, Binghamton, Cortland, and Johnson City. The bank continued to expand to numerous other cities throughout the Southern Tier. In 1980, the Marine Midland Bank merged with the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation and, in 1998, all branches changed their name to HBSC Bank USA. The main Elmira branch was located at 150 Lake Street with additional branches on North and South Main, as well as in Elmira Heights and Horseheads. In 2009, HSBC Bank USA sold off all their branches in upstate New York.
