Scope and content:

The McDowell Family Papers contain genealogical notes and histories; McDowell family correspondence, 1828-1980; papers associated with Mrs. Robert McDowell's work with the Elmira Community Concert Association; photographs; and miscellaneous family documents.

Biographical / historical:

The first McDowell to settle in Chemung County was Daniel McDowell (1763-1806) who came here as a prisoner of war in 1779. He returned and settled in what is now the Town of Chemung in 1786. The family continues to reside in Chemung County. Boyd McDowell (1857-1928), one of Daniel's descendants, was a lawyer and avid genealogist.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
