Scope and content:

The Carl Proper Collection contains papers, photographs and newspaper clippings relating to Carl Proper's television career and charitable works as well as programs, images and clippings relating to the Elmira Little Theatre.

Biographical / historical:

Carl E. Proper (1932-2012), son of Charles and Margaret Proper, was born and raised in Elmira, N.Y. He began working for Channel 18, WSYE-TV, in 1956 as 'Coach Carl' on the kid's show TV Clubhouse. He eventually switched to news and remained on the air at Channel 18 (later called WETM-TV) for over 35 years as a report, anchor and weather man. Proper was highly active within the community. He acted regularly in the Elmira Little Theatre and narrated concerts for various orchestral groups. He was involved in a number of local charities including the Arctic League, Glove House, and the Red Cross. He died on October 6, 2012.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
