Scope and content:

The Helen Covey Collection contains materials from the various clubs of which Covey was a member including the Elmira Business & Professional Women’s Club, the Elmira Ceramics Guild and the Travel Club of Elmira, as well as the Federation of Women’s Clubs. This includes annual programs, newsletters, event programs, administrative documents and miscellaneous material from the Business & Professional Women’s Club; programs, administrative documents and photographs from the Travel Club; assorted papers of the Elmira Ceramics Guild, Chemung County Council of Women, and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Biographical / historical:

Helen Covey (1914-2013) was an active member and officer of a number of area organizations and clubs including the Elmira Business & Professional Women’s Club, the Ladies of Charity, the Travel Club, the Garden Club, the Ceramics Guild, and the Chemung County Council of Women. She served, at various points, as the president of the Elmira Business & Professional Women’s Club and the Elmira Travel Club. The Elmira Business and Professional Women’s Club of Elmira was founded in 1935. It was a local branch of the national club, which was founded in 1919 to promote the interests of working women through lobbying, supplementary training, scholarships, and social activities. The Elmira branch dissolved in 2006 due to a lack of membership.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
