- Biographical / historical:
-
Edward Scharf (1831-1874) and his wife Elizabeth (1826-1897) emigrated from Germany to Elmira, New York, in 1852. He worked as a butcher, as did his son. Frederick Sheely Sr. (1801-1836), his wife, and children emigrated from Germany to the United States during the 1830s. They initially settled in Allegheny County, New York, but the oldest son, Frederick Sheely Jr. (1828-1901) eventually settled in Southport, New York. There he established a tannery. His sons continued the tradition with their own tanneries. Fred Scharf (1885-1953) married Mildred H. Sheely (1893-1974) in 1919. Their daughter, Harriet Scharf Ehringer, and Mildred's sister, Olive Sheely (1889-1982), compiled the collection.
