Thrift Sunshine Circle was founded by Stella Nichols Mount in 1918 to do good works for the community. Founding members included Florence Drake Howe, Marguerite Williams Price, Louise Goodrich Newell, Helene Goodrich Eddy, and Nellis Lawrence Thomas. The club initially met in members’ homes, but eventually had their own room at the Y.W.C.A. where they would meet and sew clothing for the poor. The Thrift Sunshine Circle’s charitable activities included collecting and making clothes for the poor, distributing food baskets during the holidays, and making gifts for soldiers. The organization remained in operation through the 1970s.
