Scope and content:

The Van Vleet Papers contain letters written by James Van Vleet to his family during the Civil War, 1863-1865, as well as miscellaneous Van Vleet family papers.

Biographical / historical:

James F. Van Vleet of Lodi Center, NY, enlisted as a private in Company H of the 107th New York Volunteers at age 24 on August 4, 1862. He was mustered out as a sergeant on June 5, 1865 in Washington, D.C. along with his regiment. After the war, he returned home where he married Lois Ida Terry in 1868. John D.M. Van Vleet, his younger brother, enlisted in the same regiment at age 19. He was wounded in action on May 25, 1864 at Dallas, Georgia and died of his wounds on June 24, 1864 in a hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
