Scope and content:

The Henry D. Kane Papers contain photographs, postcards, and documents related to Kane’s service in World War I, 1915-1919; and photographs and milk bottle label designs related to Kane’s work at Thatcher Glass Manufacturing Company, 1940s-1960s.

Biographical / historical:

Henry D. Kane (1897-September 21, 1988) of Elmira, New York, served in the United States Army during World War I as a corporal with Company M, 26th Infantry, 1st Division. He was stationed for some time in Molsberg, Germany, after the end of the war and returned to the United States aboard the U.S.S. Marcia in August 1919. After returning home, he worked as a commercial artist. From 1937 until his retirement in 1963, Kane worked for the Thatcher Glass Manufacturing Company in Elmira Heights designing milk bottle labels. He married to Helen Enright on August 26, 1937 and the two went on to have a daughter, Camilla Kane Stadtmueller, and son, Daniel Kane.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
