Biographical / historical:

The Chemung Valley Mutual Loan Association was founded by Judge Seymour Dexter on April 26, 1875 in order to help Elmirans purchase their own homes. During its first fifty years, the Association rented a series of offices including a building at the corner of Baldwin and Carroll Streets, 153 Lake Street, and the first floor of the Federation Building. In 1923, they purchased their own home at 220 East Water Street. In 1927, the name changed to the Chemung Valley Savings & Loan Association. In 1964, bank relocated again, this time to 351 North Main Street. During the early 1970's, the Association expanded with branches in Elmira Heights and Watkins Glen. They were bought out by the Columbia Banking Federal Savings & Loan Association in the 1980's.
