Background

Scope and content:

The Seafuse/Merritt Private Hospital Collection contains medical charts from the Seafuse Private Hospital, 1911-1915, and the Merritt Private Hospital, 1919-1921.

Biographical / historical:

In 1907, Dr. Samuel M. Seafuse began operating a private hospital out of his home at 1005 Walnut Street in Elmira, New York. From 1907 to 1917, he ran the Seafuse Private Hospital at that location. In 1918, he sold to Mrs. Eva M. Paradise, who ran the Paradise Private Hospital from 1918 to 1919. It was then purchased by Mrs. Mae Merritt who operated it as the Merritt Private Hospital, 1919 to 1922. Dr. Samuel M. Seafuse took over the place again in 1923 and ran it as the Seafuse Private Hospital until 1931. The property was later used as a boarding house.
