Background

Scope and content:

The Morrell Family Collection contains photographs, newspaper clippings and business cards. The bulk of the collection consists of images of the Morrell family and their places of work from 1903 to 1934.

Biographical / historical:

Andrew and Anthony Sr. Morrell came to Elmira, New York, from Italy in 1893. Anthony Sr. and his wife had 10 children: Pauline, Donald, Edmund, Joseph, Carl, Anthony Jr., Gerald, Thomas, Paul, and John. Shortly after arriving in Elmira, Andrew Morrell opened a tailor shop at 110 State Street. The shop moved to 101 East Water Street when Anthony Sr. joined the business. Anthony Sr. retired from the business in 1951, and his sons, Carl, Tony, Tom, and Donald, moved the store to 303 College Ave. They closed the shop in 1981.

The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Carl Morrell in 2004.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
