The Mary Stewart Pollock Papers contains her letters home to her family over the course of her work in the Foreign Service, 1952-1978.

Biographical / historical:

Mary Stewart Pollock (February 1, 1922- April 9, 2001) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to Robert E. & Agnes M. Pollock. After her father’s death, her mother married Josiah J. Willard, Jr. and the whole family moved to Elmira, New York around 1940 when he became the president of the Elmira Coca-Cola Bottling Plant. After holding a number of typists and clerical jobs in the area, Pollock applied for work in the Foreign Service as a clerical worker in 1952. She was employed as a secretary for the US. State Department from 1952-1978. Her postings include: Tokyo, Japan, 1952-1954; Paris, France, 1954-1957; Reykjavík, Iceland, 1959-1961; Cairo, Egypt, 1961-1968; Paris, France, 1969-1973; Kinshasa, Zaire, 1973-1976; Brussels, Belgium, 1976-1978; and Washington, DC, 1978-1981. She returned to Elmira, New York, following her retirement and was active in the community until her death.
