Scope and content:

The Lain-Carpenter Family Collection contains genealogical notes on the Lain and Carpenter families; photograph albums of the families and Elmira Heights, 1860s-1900; local history scrapbook, 1940s; Lain family reunion material 1920s-40s.

Biographical / historical:

The Lain and Carpenter families of the Twin Tiers were united in 1890 with the marriage of Jennie P. Lain (1867-January 5, 1944) and Smith F. Carpenter (1863-May 25, 1917). The couple settled in Elmira Heights in 1894 where Smith ran a small variety store. Their children include David, Smith, and Harriet Carpenter. Jennie was an avid genealogist and the record keeper for the Lain family reunion.

Acquisition information:
The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by James Canfield in 2010.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
