Scope and content:

The British War Relief Society Collection primarily contains correspondence, newsletters, news clippings flyers and other assorted documents related to the organization dating from 1941. It also contains Mooers family papers including magazines dating from 1941 and 1951, and a page from their scrapbook from 1943.

Biographical / historical:

British War Relief Society, Inc. was incorporated in 1941 and served as an umbrella organization for various charitable organizations aimed at assisting the British during World War II. The Society sought to raise funds as well as donations of food and material goods. Their headquarters were on Fifth Street in New York City, but there were local branch committees scattered throughout the United States. In Elmira, New York, the local committee was chaired by Mrs. Jervis Langdon. The Knitting Committee, which made clothes and blankets for British civilians and military personnel, was headed up by Mrs. Edward Allen Mooers.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
