Scope and content:

The Mark Twain Hotel Collection contains photographs of the hotel's construction; promotional brochures; menus; correspondence relating to the installation of a sprinkler system; and architectural and construction plans.

Biographical / historical:

The Mark Twain Hotel was located on West Gray Street at the corner with North Main in downtown Elmira, New York. It was designed by George B. Post & Sons, architects, and built by the Lowman Construction Company. The hotel opened on March 23, 1929. The Mark Twain Hotel was host to several restaurants, cafes and shops and served as a premier location for parties and banquets. The Mark Twain began its slow decline in the 1960s, and in 1973 it was shut down and was converted into an apartment building.

The items in this collection were donated to the Booth Library by Mary B. Miller in 1998.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
