Biographical / historical:

The Beers family first arrived in Elmira, New York, in 1815 with Jabez H. Beers (1794-1860) and his wife, Rebecca Wood Beers (1796-1860). The couple's children were Susan (1815-?), John W. (1817-1830), George H. (1819-1843), Thomas W. (1821-?), Eliza (1822-?), William (1825-?), Mary Ann (1826-?), Edmund O. (1829-1913), Amanda (1831-?), Francis, Jacob H. (1835-?), Joseph D. (1836-?) and Elsie (1840-?). Of the girls, Susan married Clarence Norwood, Eliza married Edwin Oliver, Mary Ann married William Lowman, Amanda married John Davidson, Francis married Orlando Smith, and Elise married Dr. E.S. Terry. Of the sons, Thomas moved to Illinois with his family during the 1850s. During the Civil War, Edmund, Jacob, and Joseph all served. Edmund was the captain in the 50th NY Engineers during the war and later served with the Thirtieth Separate Company and eventually retired with the rank of General. Jacob Beers served with the 9th New York Volunteers.
