This collection contains cartes de visite of various individuals from Chemung County, as well as some views of Chemung County sites.

Biographical / historical:

The carte de visite was a popular style of portrait photography first developed in France in 1854. Cartes de viste are 64 mm (2.5 in) × 100 mm (4 in). In the United States, the style flourished briefly between 1859 and 1870, before falling out of favor. People used the photographs as calling cards and also collected cartes de visite of celebrities.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
