Scope and content:

The Jacob Mosher Streetcar Collection contains records associated with the Amalgamated Association of Street, Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America and its Women’s Auxiliary; various forms and documents from Elmira’s streetcar and bus companies; and the Moshier’s Grange certificates.

Biographical / historical:

Jacob Mosher (1893-1971) worked as streetcar operator in Elmira from 1931 to 1939 and a bus driver from 1939 until he retired in 1955. Over the course of his career, he worked for the same company under four different names: Elmira Water, Light and Railroad Company; Elmira Light, Heat and Power Corporation; New York State Electric & Gas Company; and Elmira Motorcoach Corporation. He and his wife, Lena (1890-1976), were members of the Grange. Lena was also a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Amalgamated Association of Street, Electric Railway, and Motor Coach Employees of America.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
