The Thomas Mifflin Perry Papers contain business correspondence related to Thomas M. Perry’s general store, as well as other business-related documents, 1795-1831.

Biographical / historical:

Thomas Mifflin Perry (1777-1836) came to the Village of Newtown (now Elmira, New York) in 1793 at age 16 and established a general store at the foot of what is now High Street. He was initially in a partnership with Matthias Hollenbeck of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, who was also his supplier. Around 1800, he dissolved that partnership and went into business with his older brother Benjamin Perry, also of Wilkes-Barre. By 1812, he was also partnered with Guy Maxwell of Elmira. In 1798, he married Elizabeth Konkle and the couple had seven children.
