This collection covers Alice Bartlett’s time at Fredonia and her involvement with the Theater Arts Program. It covers various productions that she oversaw and her interest in speech and speech therapy.

Biographical / historical:

Alice Bartlett was born in Minneapolis on February 17, 1927. She was the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Milne Bartlett. She graduated from Grove City College in 1948 and then worked as an instructor in English and Speech in Pennsylvania high schools at Altoona, Beaver and Ellensburg. She received her MA in 1958 from Northwestern University. In the fall of 1958, she came to Fredonia as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech. She taught more than ten different courses in Fredonia in the areas of theater, communications, and education.

In 1978, she served as chair of the Theater Arts Department. Miss Bartlett directed 45 productions for Pierians and three for Mummers, Individually, Thurber Carnival, Lysistrata, and the Madwoman of Chaillot. 1979 she served as Assistant dean for Arts and Humanities. She was a member of the national honorary fraternity, Phi Betta Kappa and traveled extensively in Europe. She also was a member of several professional associations including the American Theater Association and the Speech Communication Association. In 1981 the Bartlett Theater at Rockefeller Arts Center was named in her honor.

The Collection is arranged in subject folders, with items within each folder arranged accordingly by year, month, and day. Although there is little correspondence the collection does include a number of student papers Miss Bartlett prepared while attending Northwestern University summer school, 1956, 1958, 1959, and 1960, and University of Michigan, 1966.
