Three letters between Owen P. White and Edward T. Newell, clippings, and the text of a speech relating to the presentation to the ANS of a satirical medal to honor an unknown attacker of Senator Huey Long of Louisiana.
- Biographical / historical:
-
In 1933, an unknown assailant attacked Senator Huey Long of Louisiana, known as “Kingfish,” in the washroom of the Sands Point Bath Club on Long Island. The novelist Owen P. White jokingly suggested that the attacker should be given a gold medal, and soon money had been raised to actually produce one, which would be designed by George De Zayas. Though White believed “no dignified museum would be frivolous enough to accept it,” the American Numismatic Society’s president, Edward T. Newell, was happy to have it in the collections, which already housed numerous satirical medals.
