Biographical / historical:

Emily Martin was born in 1895 in Middletown, Connecticut to Reverend Karl A. Martin and Amelia Halvorsen Martin and graduated from Jamestown High School. In 1916, she joined the staff of the National Committee for Mental Hygiene and was the secretary of Frankwood Williams when he was Medical Director of the National Committee for Mental Hygiene. She worked with him on the program of the First International Congress on Mental Hygiene in Washington D.C. and on other projects in the mental health field, in addition to assisting Clifford Beers and Thomas Salmon. She retired in 1964 from the National Association for Mental Health, the successor to the NCMH.
