Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains the papers of the neurologist and psychiatrist Herta Seidemann (1900-1984). The papers were collected by Dr. Jimmie Holland, a psychiatrist at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center who treated Seidemann toward the end of her life. These materials were shared with Wenda Focke and Dr. Klaus Neumarker for their books on Herta Seidemann and Karl Bonhoeffer, respectively. Holland had also recorded an interview with Seidemann, which she shared with Focke, who transcribed the interview. This collection is arranged in three series: Correspondence, Audiovisual Materials, and Subject Files.

Correspondence: this series consists of Dr. Karl Bonhoeffer’s letters to Seidemann, and Dr. Jimmie Holland’s correspondence with Wenda Focke and Dr. Klaus Neumarker.

Subject Files: this series contains Seidemann’s English translations of Rainer Maria Rilke, Seidemann’s medical records with notes by both Seidemann and Holland, and various books, reprints, and reproductions, including the work of Carl Jung, Karl Bonhoeffer, Benno Hahn, Joan Corrie, and Wenda Focke.

Audiovisual Materials: this series contains a video interview of Seidemann by Holland and photographs collected by Seidemann of herself and other prominent psychiatrists. A transcription of the interview made by Wenda Focke is located in the Holland Correspondence folder in the Correspondence series.
