Norman Dain earned his doctorate degree at Columbia University, during which he was a research fellow in the History of Psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinic. He went on to become a Professor of History at Rutgers University and earned a Guggenheim fellowship and the Benjamin Rush Award of the American Psychiatric Association, in addition to being an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and a member of the Research Faculty at the DeWitt Wallace Institute, Weill Cornell Medical College. His three books included Concepts of Insanity in the United States 1789-1865; Disordered Minds: The First Century of Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, 1766-1866; and Clifford W. Beers: Advocate for the Insane before his death in 2015.
