Scope and content:

This collection contains the papers of Gerald Klerman, who chief of the Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration from 1977 to 1980 and an American psychiatrist who studied schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorders. There are four series in this collection.

Research Materials and Grants: These series contains documentation of various studies and grants, including guidelines, correspondence, memos, forms, grant applications, and reports, primarily from NIMH collaborative studies.

Conference Materials: These documents appear to be entirely from the conference Panic and Anxiety: A Decade of Progress, held in Geneva, Switzerland in June 1990, which Dr. Klerman was the chairman of. The materials include printed-out slides from presenters, invitations and correspondence with participants, and the conference packet, with the program, participant and presenter lists, and abstracts.

Biographical / historical:

Gerald L. Klerman (1928-1992) was born in New York City and graduated from Cornell University in 1950, where he was a member of the Quill and Dagger society. After graduating from New York University School of Medicine in 1954, he had a year-long medical internship at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York and complete his psychiatry residency at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston. His research specialties included schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorders, including the development of interpersonal psychotherapy, a short-term treatment for depression. After working two years as a researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health, at Yale University he was a faculty member and director of the university's mental health center from 1966 to 1970. He went on to work at Harvard University and was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to be the head of the Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration from 1977 to 1980 before his death in 1992.
