Scope and content:

This collection contains materials on Charles W. Hunt, who was president of Oneonta Normal School from 1933 to 1951. Included in this collection are articles, correspondence, photographs, publications, and other ephemera related to Dr. Hunt.

Biographical / historical:

Charles Wesley Hunt was born in 1880 in North Charleston, N.H. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Brown in 1904 and his Master’s degree from Columbia in 1910. His doctorate he received in 1924. He first taught at the Horace Mann School in New York City. He held various jobs at other institutions including Briarcliff Manor, Teachers College Columbia, University of Pittsburg, and the Cleveland Ohio School of Education. He became president of the Oneonta Normal School in 1933. When he retired in 1951, he had helped transform the school into a four year state university. After retirement he was very involved with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). He died in 1973, at the age of 92.

Arrangement:

The collection is arranged into four series.

Series 1: Biographical Materials, Box Collection #3/3 (1880-1984) This series is composed of 4 record boxes all containing biographical material on Dr. Hunt. It contains articles, awards and certificates, photographs, correspondence, and other ephemera.

Series 2: Career Related Materials, Box Collection #3/3 (1942-1979) This series is composed of 4 record boxes all containing career and professional material on Dr. Hunt. It contains publications, correspondence, and other documents

Series 3: Photograph Folder This series is composed of one folder which is located in the filing cabinet in the storage room. It contains a few photographs of Dr. Hunt.

Series 4: Oversize and Memorabilia (1901, 1903, 1924) The items in this series are located in Drawer 26 of the Alden Room. There are two certificates and one diploma all belonging to Dr. Hunt.
