Scope and content:

This collection consists of photographic prints of Rochester and the surrounding area, used by Wolfe Community Newspapers for stories or articles in their weekly suburban newspapers. The materials date between 1962 and 1999. The materials consist of photographic print copies, negatives, and proof sheets.

The collection consists of photographs used by the Wolfe Community Newspapers from about the 1970's to the 1990's. The Wolfe Community Newspapers covered local events and community life in the Rochester suburbs. These photographs were assembled to accompany articles to be published.

There are markings and notes on the back of the prints regarding location, crop size, and percentages. The prints are geletin emulsion "Duraflex" prints from original 8x10's.

Biographical / historical:

Wolfe Community Newspapers was started in 1956 by Andrew Wolfe. Andrew Wolfe was a journalist from Rochester, New York. He began his career with the Rochester Times-Union in 1947. Wolfe worked as an editorial writer and in 1952; he worked for the University of Rochester as the assistant director and then director of development.

In 1956, Andrew Wolfe bought three original newspapers; The Brighton-Pittsford Post, East Rochester Post Herald, and the Penfield Post Republican. The three original newspapers had a circulation of 1,200. Wolfe Community Newspapers continued to build and eventually had a chain of nine newspapers with a circulation of 45,000. The newspapers were weekly papers that emphasized the suburbs of Rochester, local people, and local events. Wolfe Community Newspapers was sold to Canandaigua Messenger Inc., in September 1996 for an undisclosed sum.

Donated by Helen V. Elam, Henrietta Town Historian on August 3, 2003.
Custodial history:

Messenger Post Newspapers were going to dispose of the photographs but decided to donate them to the Henrietta Town Historian. The note included with the collection states: "From : Helen V. Elam, Henrietta Town Historian. Messenger Post Newspaper had collected about 20 boxes of photos from the old Wolfe Publicatiosn newspapers and were going to discard them. However, someone in their office suggested they be sent to the various town historians to see if they might want them. I went through these boxes after others had seen them and discovered many photos that had been overlooked and I am sending them to the proper town historians. This was quite an effort to go over thse pictures and took much time, but it was worthwhile as I have almost two boxes for Henrietta. They are about from the 1970 to the 1990's."

Processing information:

This project was made possible by a grant from the Local Government Records Managment Improvement Fund.

The bulk of the photographs have some damage to the emulsion but are in stable condition and have been placed in archival quality folders and envelopes. The photographic prints were rehoused and kept in the original order they were received, by subject. The prints were further divided into folders according to their size.
