Background

Scope and content:

Carbon copies of correspondence from George Eastman regarding African hunting trip. Includes travel itineraries. Materials date from 1927 and 1928.

Biographical / historical:

After his retirement from the company he founded, Eastman Kodak, in 1925, George Eastman took up a standing offer from Martin and Osa Johnson to go on an African safari. Eastman was a an inveterate traveler, and Martin Johnson, a Kodak sales agent from Missouri, had interested him in going to Africa following Johnson's own travel there in the early 1920s. Johnson had used the trip to demonstrate the capability of Kodak equipment for wildlife photography through a film entitled Trailing African Wild Animals, and Eastman saw similar potential in his own safari. Eastman was a fastidious planner whose detailed preparations involved sending out over 200 boxes of supplies prior to his own departure for Kenya on December 14, 1927. Accompanied by Dr. Albert D. Kaiser, Eastman traveled to the Kedong Valley of Kenya, where he went on a photo safari. He returned to Africa in 1928, this time to hunt, bagging several trophies.
