Background

Scope and content:

The papers document various aspects of the club's existence and activities, including lists of officers, some board meeting minutes, some financial statements, and various ephemera. The most useful item for researchers is a paper-bound volume, Genesee Dancers Rochester, N.Y., 1955–1996. Compiled by four couple-members, the volume contains year-by-year accounts through 1996 of the club's officers, committees, staff, events, successes, and issues (particularly the impact of declining membership). When the club finally shut down in May 2003, reminiscences and other summaries were generated for the final event.

Biographical / historical:

This small set of papers documents the history of the Genesee Dancers, a Rochester, New York-based Western square dance club. The club was a non-profit organization whose primary purpose was to promote round and square dancing, to meet at regular intervals to dance for enjoyment, and to provide instruction in round and square dancing. The Genesee Dancers were active from 1955 until 2003.

Custodial history:

The Papers of the Genesee Dancers were donated to The Strong by the Genesee Dancers on February 28, 2007. They were then transferred to Rochester Public Library in May 2015.

Arrangement:

Arrangement of the records is chronological.
