Background

Scope and content:

5 volumes of records of the Monroe County American Legion Auxiliary, including 3 scrapbooks, 1 photographic album, and 1 volume of secretarial records.

This collection documents some of the activities of the Monroe County American Legion Auxiliary between 1934 and 1988. The records included cover several short periods of time within that period. The materials include a scrapbook of the group's activities for 1934 and 1935, a scrapbook of a visit to El Salvador by members of the group in 1958-59, a volume of secretarial records covering June 1969 to June 1974, and both a scrapbook and a photo album for June 1987 to June 1988.

Biographical / historical:

The Monroe County American Legion Auxiliary traces its origins to the women's auxiliary of Burton Miller Post, unofficially formed in 1916 as the auxiliary to the then Second Ambulance Company. After the First World War, the auxiliary joined the Burton Miller Post, which was formed by former members of the company. This was the first women's auxiliary to any Legion post nationally. An additional women's auxiliary in Rochester formed at the Signal Post in March 1919. Both of these groups predated the foundation of the national American Legion Auxiliary in February of 1920. From these beginnings, the American Legion Auxiliary became a part of of every American Legion post in Monroe County. The groups have been heavily involved in voluntary service work for almost a century, and continue to play a role in Rochester's civic life today. Most notably, the American Legion Auxiliary is involved in citizenship courses and the naturalization of immigrants.

The materials held by the Rochester Public Library were donated due to the retirement of local American Legion Auxiliary officers. These officers desired that the materials go to a local repository, rather than being transferred to the state offices in Albany.
